Entourage problem

I am a new OSX and Entourage user. My Entourage account disappeared
this morning and defaulted to the welcome screen for a new user. I
cannot locate any sent or received emails, or addresses. It is like I
am a new user and I appear to have lost everything. I had to re-enter
my account settings and now Entourage is working OK.

The strange thing is my PowerBook, which is independent and not
networked to the iMac, did exactly the same thing a couple of hours
earlier according to the time on the message for the new user welcome
screen.

Is there any reason for this? Is there any way I can retrieve my lost
address information or emails. I had not backed up this information as
this was my next intention on my 'to-do' list.

Try "switch identity", which drops down from the Entourage menu at the
top left. Your old identity is probably still there.

I resolved my problem which was simple in the end. I am a new OSX user
and had been storing my work files in the 'Documents' folder. During
housekeeping, I moved all my work files to a new 'Work' folder that I
created. At the same time, I moved the Microsoft User Data folder!! As
soon as undid this move I could get Entourage working again.

After all the panic and sleepless nights, it is somewhat reassuring to
know that it was me and not the Mac at fault. However, I am surprised
that OSX doesn't have a Warning Dialog Box for actions such as moving
folders that compromise functionality.

Thanks

The problem here is that the location of the MUD file is an internal concern
of Microsoft applications, not of the OS. So, Apple has no knowledge of the
need of Microsoft applications to have that file in a certain place (ie, in
the Documents folder).

I strongly urge you to back up the MUD file early and often. MS apps have a
nasty habit of overwriting them from time to time on a reinstall or other
glitch during maintenance. It can be a real pain.

While not disputing the wisdom of backing up thoroughly and often, I have to
take issue with the statement that MS Apps (presumably Office being referred
to here?) overwrite the files from time to time! I have never experienced
that problem and it certainly isn't mentioned on these newsgroups as a
regular occurrence.

Mostly, any loss of data 'during re-installs or Š maintenance' can be traced
to operator error.
