Entourage problem

Dear Folks

We use a very old version of Entourage X on our Macs. One user has
over 7000 items in her Entourage environment. Just recently she
started having trouble sending and receiving through Entourage X. In
trying to resolve her problem, I frequently get the message "The
action could not be completed. An I/O error occurred." This happens
when I try to display the items in any folder (Drafts, Deleted Items)
except the Inbox. I was able to move several thousand items from the
Inbox to Deleted Items, but the same error message appears when I try
to empty the Deleted items folder.
The nature of this problem indicates to me that it has something to do
with the large number of items. Our Internet access is fine. We can
get our mail server directly without any problem. The particular user
of Entourage X in question does not fool around with any of the
program's technical settings. The problem just arose out of the blue
the other day.
Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Don't know offhand but one other piece of info that might be helpful
is that the Entourage Database file with over 7000 items in it uses
952.4 MB on disk space.

I/O error almost always means disk damage. Use Disk Utility to check the
drive.

(It would help if you would quote the message to which you reply (as I
have done above), so that everyone reading your message will have some
context, and will know, for instance, what it is you "don't know
offhand". ; ) Since you are replying to me, I, of course, know what
you are talking about. But for everyone else, not quoting makes it
hard to follow the conversation.)

Entourage 2001 is extremely old. We're all the way up to Office 2004
now and it was just updated a month or so ago.

As Diane mentioned, I/O errors are typical of file system corruption. I
do hope you have a backup of the database. If not, it may be too late
- but go ahead and back up what you can off this computer ASAP.

Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, as Diane also suggested, and
Verify the volume. Hopefully whatever problems are found can be
repaired.

Dear Folks,

Good news today. After a typical Rebuild failed, I was able to do an
Advanced Rebuild of the Entourage Database. This restored the
functionality I needed to delete items from the Deleted Items folder.
In addition to the over 7,000 items in the Inbox, there were over
10,000 in the Sent Items folder. I certainly looks like the shear
number of emails overwhelmed Entourage. Thanks for your suggestions
and help with my problem.

Set up a schedule to delete items in Deleted Items folder. Sorry there is no
schedule to get them to delete in the first place.
