You need to turn on smtp authentication (it's under the 'advanced sending
options' button in the account settings).

Also, be aware that mac.com does not let you 'redirect' messages - i.e. You
cannot send mail with a 'from' address different to the mac.com account
address

Right. One big reason I have dotMac is so I can send IMAP from hotspots.
Remember that the signal you receive is always much stronger than the signal
you send. You can ping the router using Network Utility to see this
firsthand. If you send 10 pings but receive 3 pings in return you can bet
the base can't hear you even when the signal meter is at 90%.

DotMac IMAP is especially picky about wireless, I can do 3 POP accounts on a
marginal signal but not dotMac, it will simply stall until I reposition.

Keep us informed.

I am confused. If I have a strong signal, and am on the internet, why would
that have any impact on using .mac mail?

I tried that setting and said -- use the same setting as incoming server.
And I got the same error message that entourage authentication doesn't work
with .mac mail.
