entourage quits

Help. I cannot launch entourage at all. After the ID window it gives
a message that it automatically quit, etc. It does not matter where I
try to launch it from, always the same result. The other Office
products work fine.

I am the administrator account on this computer. My wife and
daughters have other accounts, and Entourage launches fine on their
accounts. So, it won't launch on my account only and other programs
including the Explorer browser work fine.

Suggestions please.

You have either a corrupt message trying to download on startup, or a
corrupt database. Probably the former.

Go to ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ and remove or trash the Entourage
Preferences and Entourage Settings (10) files. That will set your Send &
Receive All schedule to run only Manually, not at Startup.

Launch Entourage. I'm assuming your main account, or one of them, is a POP
account. Go to Tools/Accounts/Mail/that account/Edit/Options. Check "Allow
online access" at the bottom, click OK.

In your Folder list at left you'll now see an icon for the account server.
Click it. Turn off Preview Pane in View menu. Sort by Received column. Click
on the oldest non-downloaded message. (If you usually do not leave messages
on the server it will be the oldest message. If you do leave messages on the
server it will be the oldest one with the jagged partial-envelope icon.)
Then delete the message (actually it marks it for deletion). Now press cmd-K
to Send and Receive All. Normally all is well and your messages download to
their usual folders. (If you crash, relaunch, go back there, turn Preview
Pane on, click messages until you find the one that causes the crash, go
back turn Preview Pane off and delete that message.)

If you still couldn't launch after removing preferences, start Entourage
holding down Option key and do an Advanced Rebuild in the window that comes
up.

OK, Thanks for the help thus far, but it gets more complicated. I
trash the Pref and Settings files and then I can launch. As it
happens I have two identities - an old one for my wife and mine. My
wife's will launch OK, but mine will not, Entourage (X for Mac) quits.
I have renamed my old identity and set up a new identity with my old
settings so I can get my mail. But, of course, I don't have access to
the database of the old identity.

So, I tried an Advanced Rebuild of my old account and the outcome is
still the same, I cannot launch entourage with my old (original)
account identity.

Is there a way I can import my old identity database into my new
identity?

Hi Paul

I've tried rebuilding a database (both types of build) on X - I keep
getting an error stating that the database cannot be rebuilt.

The db size is just over 2GB - is this still an issue on Entourage X?

I've checked out the various messages regarding this issue and caanot
find an example where a recovery was performed. Are there any tools or
utilities that can be used to extract messages from the corrupt db?

Thanks

I have the same problem - the database cannot be rebuilt, but only with one
identity (and this database is 2.3 GB large). I know similar problem from
Outlook Express and MAC OS 9 with large database. The workaround is to give
more memory to outlook. Can I do this with Entourage 10.1.4 in OS 10.3.1?

If you upgraded to SR-1 - v10.1.0 - or later, the db size can be up to 4 GB.
And the rebuilding tools keep getting better. You haven't said which version
you have. So update Office with Office 10.1.2 and 10.1.4 (and might as well
10.1.5) Updaters from MacTopia. Then try an Advanced Rebuild again.

There's a 3rd-party app called Entouraid which has got mixed reviews. I',m
not sure if it even works on X, but you can check it out if the rebuild
doesn't.
