Entourage rules are working but no new mail count indicated

Hi,

First off, let me say that I'm a linux guy and have been running on the
desktop since 1996 and am not a huge MS fan. I've been using
thunderbird up until and was glad that it was a simple migration to the
Mac. Out of curiosity, figured I'd give Entourage a test and I have to
say, I really like it. Except for one thing.

I've got my rules working properly but once Entourage filters my mail
and puts them in their respecive folders, there is no new mail count
next to the folder. For example, if I've got a rule that filters email
that is from '@foo.com' and is to move it to the 'Foo' folder, it does
this successfully. The problem that I'm having is that there is no
indication that there is any new mail in that 'Foo' folder. What I
would expect is something like:

Foo (1)

But instead, it is unchanged as if there is no new mail in that folder.
This is obviously a real problem as I've already missed a lot of email
because Entourage has correctly filtered my mail but there simply has
been no notification that there is new mail.

Has anyone seen this before and if so, what was the fix?

Thanks!

What version of Entourage are you using? Are you using POP or IMAP accounts.
Entourage 2004 (v 11.5) behaves exactly as you (and I) expect when moving
e-mail from POP accounts, showing the count of unread messages. Make sure
your rules don't have an action to "Change status" to "Read".

I don't have any "move" rules for my IMAP accounts, so I don't know how it
would behave on those.

Sorry, I should have included that information in my original post.
This is Entourage 2008, version 12.1.4 (081024) only using IMAP
accounts. On some of the rules, I've explicity selected the "Change
status" to "Unread" and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

This is really the only gripe that I've got and have been very
impressed with Entourage. Unfortunately, this is a huge issue and I
might have to move back to Thunderbird if I can get it resolved :-/

Yes, this is sad. I was forced to return to Thunderbird (which isn't
*that* bad) because of this one issue :(

I can verify that with my IMAP accounts the unread status does display
next to folders where I've automatically routed messages with rules.

Go to Tools --> Accounts... and double-click your IMAP account. Under
the Options tab make sure the very last item is enabled "Check for
unread messages in subscribed folders".

Hope this helps!

Hi Bill and thanks for the reply.

I thought maybe it was something in the customizing that I'd done so I
moved my existing set up out of the way and re-added my gmail account
(and the "Check for unread messages in subscribed folders" is enabled
by default it seems). I then created an "if all criteria are met" IMAP
rule where 'Folder is INBOX' and 'From is [email protected]', then 'Change
status' to 'Not Junk-Email' and 'Move message' to 'mailFromMe' folder.

I send the email, wait, it comes in, the audio notification is
generated the INBOX is bold and the new mail count shows there's one
new message for the split second before the rule is applied. Once the
rule has been applied, there is no other indication that an email was
received. The 'mailFromMe' folder isn't bold and it doesn't show the
new mail count. It's only when you then click on the 'mailFromMe'
folder that it is bold, the new mail count is displayed and the audio
nofitication is strangely played again.

This is really frustrating because this seems to be the best client
I've used to date. Is there anything else that I could be missing?

Thanks again

That tells me the rule is doing something to mark the message as read.

I'm not sure if that's accurate because the rest of the sentence that
wasn't included in the reply stated:

....
The 'mailFromMe' folder isn't bold and it doesn't show the new mail
count. It's only when you then click on the 'mailFromMe' folder that
it is bold, the new mail count is displayed and the audio nofitication
is strangely played again.
....

So I did some more testing by creating a brand new user on my system
and adding a new account. Same problem. However, when I tried this on
my wife's unpatched 12.0.0 installation, it *did* work. No one else is
seeing this problem with 12.1.4?

I re-installed last night and verified that the new mail count *does*
work with 12.0.0 and ceased to work after an upgrade to 12.1.4.
