Entourage Security

Is there a way to password protect or otherwise secure one¹s email from
prying eyes. I have a friend who is running MS Office X on an Ibook G-3
with OSX.3.7. He has an Airport in his home and Airport card in the
computer. He¹s worried about someone outside the house hacking into his
Airport network or a guest or friend looking at his email within the home.
Is there a way to not allow someone to look at it without password??
Thanks/Hal Kushner

If someone from outside the house can hack into the wiFi network, having
them read his mail will be the least of his problems.

He needs to secure the network from remote access. First step is to use
encryption with a strong password. WPA is preferable to WEP (WEP has a
weakness whereby anyone with patience and a driving reason can collect
enough encrypted traffic to be able to decode the key with programmes
readily available on the internet. WPA does not suffer from this problem.).

Then, using the airport admin utility, set the airport to disable SSID
broadcast this effectively Œhides¹ the network from public view you can
still log in if you know the network name and passwords, but it will not
show up in network browsers.

Now, as a final nail-down, turn on the option to only allow connections from
known MAC-addresses (nothing to do with Apple, the MAC address is the unique
identifier of your network card).

This makes the airport secire from remote access.

Even with all this, he should consider using the built in firewall and
turning off all access he doesn¹t need on a regular basis.
