Is there a size limit for the Entourage Contacts file? I
running Office 2001 with OS 9. Thanks in advance.

I believe that in X the size limit went from 2GB to 4GB? In any case, does
anyone know what the limit is now in Entourage 2004? If larger than [whatever
X was], then what would be the best way, within 2004, to open an X database
that became fatally large and will not open in X? My brother has been waiting
for a few months to attempt to rescue his database once Office 2004 came out.
Any help is appreciated.
No. But the database size limit (including all data you have in your
Entourage identity) is 2 GB.
You can check the current size of your database by locating the file in the
Finder (it should be in HD/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2001
Identities/<Your Identity>/Database), and then selecting File -> Get Info ->
General Information. When you near 2GB, that means it is time to delete
some old stuff and rebuild the database (or create a new one and start
fresh).
Entourage 2004 no longer has a limit based on disk space, you may now have up
to 1 million objects in your database.
You might be able to get the X database into 2004 simply by opening Entourage
2004 and doing File > Import > From another program. Haven¹t tried it out
myself, but it¹s a good start.

Just to follow up on this issue, I am happy to report that my brother was
indeed successful, having installed 2004, in retrieving his locked-up X
database. It is curious that his database resultantly shrunk from 3.99GB
down to about 1; other identities of his also showed a FOURfold reduction in
size. This suggests that something went seriously wrong in X and his
database bloated catastrophically without ever warning him (he stresses that
he never received warnings). Has anyone else seen such drastic and sudden
database bloat in X?
Incidentally, the way he retrieved it was by importing using 2004¹s import
tool, since simply moving that old database to 2004 MUD folder and then
opening it, did not work, but rather caused a freeze-up each time.
My upgrade threw away all my locally cached copies of messages. Did that
happen with you as well?
I think its already been stated in another thread that just moving the old
database into the new place Will Not Work.
Cheers,
Chris
