entourage slow when start

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

When I open the entourage, show "upgrading identitites" "upgrading messages" but this process hangs around for several minutes (30-40min) Could you help me? How i turn off that process?
