Entourage slower recieving email vs Outlook PC

Hello:

I support a group of Mac users in a pretty big corporate environment
and we finally got Entourage working with the Exchange servers. Now we
can get rid of classic for outlook 2001 and some users can get rid of
the Pcs on their desks for email access. Three issues:

1) Entourage is very slow to show new emails. When someone sends an
email it immediately shows up in the Outlook PC version inbox. In
Entourage it may take an hour ( If at all ) to show up.

2) Some emails do not show up at all in Entourage. A user shows me 7
unread emails in their PC Outlook inbox and only 4 of them show up in
Entourage.

3) Global Address list not displaying all of the information available
to PC outlook users. When you CHECK NAME from the GAL say ten names pop
up JOHN SMITH. On the PC outlook version you can select PROPERTIES and
all of the info on the user appears, Address, phone numbers etc in
Entourage only the NAMES are listed.

Any help on these questions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
thanks,
Rick

WebDAV is a slower protocol than native MAPI, so the process of
synchronizing takes longer. However, if you are not synchronizing, it's not
that speed difference which is the issue but the notification as to whether
you should sync or not.

I believe that Entourage subscribes to notifications sent over UDP to get
messages as they come in, unless you're outside some corporate firewall,
where we switch to a polling mode such that every minute or so we check to
see if there're new items. If we expect to be receiving UDP notifications
and that is frustrated, then we might be slow at starting the
synchronization process.
2) Some emails do not show up at all in Entourage. A user shows me 7
unread emails in their PC Outlook inbox and only 4 of them show up in
Entourage.

If the PC Outlook is in cached mode, hit shift-F9 to force a synch of that
file to the Exchange server. When that is done, in Entourage, right click
the Inbox and choose synchronize now. Choose Window/Progress (or Cmd-7) to
watch the synchronization progress, and when the Inbox finishes synching, if
you still have the problem that the Inboxes are not synchronized, we have a
problem.

Yes, check names was not significantly updated in SP2. As an alternative to
check names, you can use the Address Book view and look up the name there.
If you open those LDAP/GAL contacts, you will get a fair amount of
information about the user.
Any help on these questions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Nathan Thanks for the response!!!
------> I see what you're saying and understand UDP is slower then
MAPI. That's fine but I'm getting messages in the Entourage Error Log:
DATE: Could not synchronize record: MAIL MESSAGE or CAL Event.
Any idea what going on here? I know that in PC Outlook there is a
setting to extend the time before you get a TIMEOUT message. You see a
progress bar communicating with Exchange server. I know ehn we changed
that to a longer time the messages went away, is there anyplace in
Entourage you can do that?

--------> I tired that on my two machine Mac & PC and they were the
same. I'll try it on a few other workstations and see what the outcome
is.Yes, check names was not significantly updated in SP2. As an

--------> Yep! Worked Great. the Check names is what it is.

Three things:

First, UDP isn't especially slower. Performing the actual synchronization
over WebDAV versus native MAPI is slower. The UDP message is just a
notification that we should perform the synch.

Second, not all synchronization errors are related to network timeouts.
There may be some messages that are sufficiently problematic to be
interpreted by Entourage (or Outlook) that it fails to synch. If you can
identify individual e-mails, contacts, or calendar items that won't sync
from Exchange to Entourage, and you can get a file copy of it (usually by
saving it from Outlook), we might be able to figure out whether it's the
message itself or not.

Third, I do not believe there is a way through a setting to change the
timeout.

Thanks Nathan!

I'll have the users try to flag the messages from Outlook.

It takes sometmes three hours for messages to show up in Entourage
after they appear in the inbox of Outlook 2003 on the PC and Outlook
2001 on the Mac.

I'll let you know as soon as I get the info from the users
Thanks, Rick
