Entourage temporary hang....

O

Owen Rubin

I have noticed that, on regular occasion, Entourage will stop responding and
an immense amount of disk trashing starts to take place. This trashing
usually lasts from 2 to 5 minutes, during which time, NO Microsoft app will
respond. Other apps opened, and the Finder are still responsive And if I
patiently wait for this trashing to complete, the app will again begin
responding, typically trying to perform the last 5 or 6 things I did (like
menu or window change clicks) all at once.

I have done the check and rebuild of the database, and the first time it
repaired a problem, and now reports none. I can only assume that this has
something to do with the database, but exactly what? Is this part of the
auto ³background² check, and if so, why is it not actually IN the
background.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It hapenned to me when I had huge projects in Entourage invilving
multiple contacts and all their e-mails. Would that be the case for you
here ??

Hi Corentin,

No. It seems almost random, although typically around the same time every
day for a while. I thought it might be some cron job, but that is not the
case. It also does not happen all the time. Often, it will happen in the
middle of typing an email, and sometimes just sitting there doing "nothing"
or when Entourage is not even the front-most app. It is odd, and so far, I
have had no luck finding the trigger. I will watch for this case though and
see if that is possible.

Thanks,
-Owen-

I am having the same issue and posted something similar yesterday. All
other apps (non MS) are fine but Entourage locks for a long time - this
has been happening for a couple of months and is really starting to
annoy. I love the stability of the Mac and generally like Office, but
this needs fixing. Any input from MS?

If it's not related to projets, then I'm not sure it is a "known bug". I
have personally never experienced this myself. Are you using Exchange at
all ??

I've noticed the same thing since I installed Tiger, although my pauses
are shorter: maybe 30 seconds or so. They happen very frequently
though, making Entourage almost unusable. It appears to be while
accessing the Exchange server, so I deleted the account and created it
again, but the behavior is still the same. I also found out that
someone else at my company has the same problem after installing Tiger.

I helped figure this one out. It's caused by one of two things:

1) An Exchange account: no fix at the present time. Wait for an Apple bug
fix to WebDAV access. Hopefully in OS 10.4.1 or 10.4.2. ?

2) A shared project on an iDisk. Also a WebDAV issue but there's a way
around it. Go to System preferences/.Mac/iDisk. Set iDisk synching ON. (It
shouldn't matter whether Automatically or Manually, but as far as I can see,
only Automatically works.)

What this does is make a copy of your iDisk on your own computer.
Periodically, it will sync in the background with your real iDisk. But as
far as Entourage cares, it can _always_ find your iDisk project - since it's
local on your computer. Therefore no hangs. When you have iDisk synching OFF
(the default), then Entourage tries to connect over network to your iDisk
and hits the WebDAV hangs. The odd bit is that that's how it works in
Panther (no "Automatic Synching" or copy in computer there), but there's no
hang.

Something changed in WebDAV access in Tiger, which is causing these rainbow
hangs (I've seen them last 4 minutes of so.) I'm sure MS (who knows about
this) and others will have alerted Apple.

Thanks for digging, but neither of these cases fit me. I do not have an
Exchange account. My corporate email is kept on Unix email server with POP
access, and while I have other email accounts (about 6 actually) none of
them are Exchange.

2). I do not have any projects, much less a shared one on an iDisk.

I do not believe that any of my accounts use WebDAV, but quite frankly, do
not know what WebDAV is, so how would I know? Would this be used with a
Microsoft Hotmail account? I do have one of those so maybe that is causing
the problem? I will delete it and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the hints.

Yes, I believe so.

The problem I'm having is like '[email protected] ' description of the
problem. Spinning beach balls for 20-30 seconds every couple of
minutes, sometimes when you are just typing a new message. Very
annoying. I've also seen posts on Apple's website about it.

Using Entourage 2004 Version 11.1.0. PowerMac 1.8 Ghz DP. MacOS X 10.4

Let's hope there's a solution out there. Not really looking forward to
having to wait for 10.4.1. Want my organisation to move to 10.4 as
quick as possible.

I'd just like to add myself to the list of the temporary hang people.

Everytime it happens - it's at the same time it's updating the inbox..

I'm just hooked into an Exchange server - I have no other servers set up.

Ditto here. We're on Exchange 2000 server, Entourage 11.1.0, Tiger,
Dual 2.5 GHz G5. Doesn't seem to be any sort of pattern to it for
me... not just when Inbox is updating. Happens every few seconds and
lasts several seconds each time. Pretty annoying when you're typing an
email and the text isn't showing up as you type!

Did some more research last night. I only had two applications open.
Entourage and Activity Monitor and I left them open the whole night. I
was particularly interested in the amount of hangs which Activity
Monitor would note. Well not much happened. Accept this morning when I
wanted to read my email. The 'hangs' would happen all the time. Pattern
is as follows. Entourage gets memory hungry and then after a couple of
seconds it starts saying in Activity Monitor 'Entourage (Not
responding)' in red. Check out
http://homepage.mac.com/lennert/PhotoAlbum5.html for a screenshot. But
after 5-10 seconds you get control back over Entourage as if nothing
has happened. While answering my emails the amount of hangs went up to
22 in 45 min.

Lesson learned: There needs to be user interaction for Entourage to
hang. It's not dictated by synchronizing to the Exchange Server.

Solution to date: None.

P.S. Interestingly enough out of three testers I'm the only one having
a problem...

Hello, all.

I am also experiencing the spinning beachball of death with Entourage.
Mine locks up Ent for good, must force quit. Only seems to occur when
I send/recieve on my PB 1.5 ghz PB. I have the same accts on my G5
dual 2ghz and no prob. Puzzling.

When I use the Activity Monitor during the death beachball episodes on
the PB17, the CPU is at 100%

Kill me.

It might be spotlight...

""I saw someone post this suggestion a couple days ago, and it has
solved my Entourage freezing up for 2 or 3 seconds once every minute or
so. Just add ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/ to the 'privacy' folder
list in Spotlight's preferences so it doesn't try to index that folder,
and bam - Entourage is quick and doesn't freeze up anymore. I have a
feeling the pst file or whatever is HUGE for some of us, and everytime
it was modified Spotlight would jump in and try to reindex it for us...
Hrm."
