Entourage transfer of data

H

HAL KUSHNER

My wife has two computers...a Mac Mini (G-4/Tiger) and an Ibook (G-3/X.2.8).
She mainly uses the Mac Mini and uses Entourage X 2004 v. 11.1. Recently we
tried to transfer her data from Entourage on the Mac Mini to the Ibook. We
copied from Mac Mini/Home Folder/Documents/Microsoft User Data to a firewire
hard drive but renamed it Microsoft User Data 10/22/05. Then we copied that
folder to Ibook/Home Folder/Documents and rebooted the machine.
When Ibook rebooted and Entourage was opened, it was like a virgin program
with no data. In the documents folder of the Home folder, there were two
folders, MS User Data and MS User Data 10/22/05. We trashed the MS User Data
folder (with no data) and renamed the folder with data to MS User Data and
rebooted. Same result...a virgin Entourage. We did that a few times with
same result (Einstein said if you do the same thing repetitively and expect
a different result you are insane). Then we tried importing data from
Entourage Folder...but it said there was no identity ...so we browsed for
correct folder and tried to import. It said it couldn¹t import because of
errors (I think they were named 006 and 002 but not sure).
Please excuse the convoluted description. I¹m sure it¹s confusing, but can
you help me? She¹s really mad.

This works for me.
Inside the Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder: the folder
"Identities" is used for mail held in the Outlook Express; the folder
"Office 2001 identities" contains the mail used by Entourage:2001; and
the folder "Office X identities" holds the mail contained in Entourage
v.X. (and the folder "Office 2004 Identities" would contain the mail
contained in Entourage 2004.)

Each of those folders will contain at least one other sub-folder for
the Entourage identity. The default name of the identity is "Main
identity", and if you have never used Entourage to create a second
identity, that will be the only one that you see. Your mail is
actually entirely inside that "Main identity" folder.

Before you replace the identity folder in Entourage v.X it is necessary
to quit the Microsoft Database Daemon process, which always has the
Database file open (to provide Office notifications of upcoming
calendar appointments and auto completions of contacts for Word.) if
you try to replace the folder while that is still running, you will
only confuse Entourage v.X.

To do this, open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities) look for
Database Daemon and quit the process. Exit, then make your switch or
changes identities. Since I use Entourage X, I just drag the "Office
X Identities" folder to a firewire drive (or anyplace where you can
get to it later). Once finished, start up Entourage so it will
automatically re-start the Database Daemon.

Then, when you have drives or computers ready, just drag your copied
Office X Identities folder right into the other computer's
Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder. It will ask if you want to
replace. Click yes. (*Do backup the one you are replacing beforhand,
just in case.
But don't rename anything.
Good luck
