Entourage vs. Outlook

I am currently running Outlook 2001 on a Microsoft Exchange Server,
but want to know about switching over to Entourage X. I had problems
with Outlook Express for Mac in that it had to send the messages into
the server and then back out. My company closed the hole in the
firewall which was allowing this, so I managed to get set up with
Outlook 2001. Now I want to use Entourage, but am afraid that I will
have to deal with the same issues I had with Outlook Express. Does
anyone know if Entourage has to be able to send into the server before
sending messages out, or does it run smoothly with the server and
firewalls to allow me to use just Entourage? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I am running a G4 with Mac OS X 10.2.6.

Thanks.

Entourage requires that your company have an SMTP server configured in order
to send mail. Often, this is the Exchange server set up with SMTP enabled.
Some extremely paranoid organizations will only allow MAPI connections to
the Exchange server. In that case, Outlook 2001 is your only option.
