Entourage will not start up now

My Entourage program is no longer working. It has been running fine
since I purchased Office:2004 and it has just stopped dead and will not
load. I am running OS 10.4.8 on my 15" Powerbook, and I had updated
all of my Office software.

My problem is only with Entourage. All of the other Office programs
are launching and running correctly. My problem is simple...it will
not launch. I can not get it to do anything. There are no error
messages or any indication of what the problem is. The icon will
bounce once in the dock and then it just stops. The word Entourage
does not apper in the top left next to the Apple logo. It was working
fine on Thursday and then it just stopped working later in the day.

I have been reading the posts in this forum, and nothing is working for
me to self-correct the issue. I have repaired my disk permissions, run
the Remove Office program, reinstalled all of Office:2004, updated to
the latest version, and deleted the Entourage permissions in my
Preferences folder. I am now out of ideas and need some help. Any one
got another idea? I am in the middle of a big project and I have many
emails stuck in my Entourage right now. Thanks.

This may be related to either bad schedules or a corrupted database. Try the
following methods:

* hold down the shift key when launching Entourage. This will temporarily
disable any schedules that might be set to run at startup. If Entourage is
now loading properly, try disabling some schedules under Tools>Schedules to
find out which one is causing this erratic behaviour.

* if the above suggestion does not work, hold down the option (alt) key when
launching Entourage. The Database Utility will now open, and you will be
given several choices. First of all, verify your the integrity of your
database. If you get any error messages, rebuild it.

Thank you for these suggestions. I should have mentioned in my
original post that I have already tried both of these. Neither one
does anything. If I restart the computer, the first time I click the
Entourage icon, it will bounce 4 times and then stop. Each time I
click on it after this, it will only bounce once and then stop.
Holding down the Shift or the Option key does not make any difference
in loading the program.

So what should I try next?

Hello again,

one thing you do not mention is: do you actually get the Database Utility to
load when you hold down the option key? Also, what is the exact version
number of Entourage? (To find out, click on the Entourage icon in the
Finder, then press Cmd+I to see the Info window.) I'm just guessing right
now, but maybe bringing it up-to-date will solve the problem.

I am not able to get ANYTHING to load. No matter what keys I press,
nothing happens. If I click th icon, nothing happens. I am running
Entourage 11.2.5. I have already updated all Office updates. Thanks
for continuing to help me.

Follow the steps for troubleshooting Entourage:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/basics.html>

Since you have tried several options, you might try step 2:

Create a new User. This will eliminate corruption or conflicts in your User
Folder:

In System Preferences: Users:

Create a new user.
Log Out/In to new user.
Open Entourage and see if the problems go away. (You might need to recreate
your account info.)
If problems disappear then you know it's a conflict or corruption in your
user folder.

If the problem exists in the new User the problem is with your system files
and you need to do an Archive and Install of the OS. Directions on Archive
and Install here.

I did create a "new user" and logged in to this new user account. I
then tried to launch Entourage and it immediately installed some fonts
to the user account. I thought this was going to work and that perhaps
my issue was with misisng fonts or something. Unfortunately though, it
did not work and the icon only bounced a few times afterwards and then
stopped. I am now having the same situation as with my main user
account.

I see that you suggest that I perform an "Archive and Install" on my
computer. I know how to do this and will do so, though it does take
time and I prefer not to have to. If I do this, will it retain all of
my Applications in the Application folder? I think that it does.
Also, will I need to remove and reinstall Ofiice:2004 after I do the A
& I on my computer? Or should I just try and launch Entourage right
after the start to see what happens?

Are there any other suggestions or comments you have for me (tips,
etc.) that I should try or do before perfoming the A & I? Is there
anything I need to do after performing the A & I to make sure all is
good?

It does retain your applications. You might need to re-enter some of your
registrations again. I would try Entourage after the Archive and Install. If
you are still having problems use "Remove Office" rather than just dragging
to the trash. Be sure to update Entourage as the database was changed and
will not open until it is updated.

Backing up is always recommended.

I did the "Archive and Install" as you suggested and my Entourage
opened up just fine. That seemed to do the trick. The hardest part
for me was to make sure everything was backed up properly, as I have
several GBs of data on the computer. The rest of the process was
simple and easy to do. Thank you for all of your help. It is very
much appreciated.
