Hey everybody, i just decided to update my Office 08 suite, and it went through a few updates, i believe up to the latest, which is 12.1.4, or something with a 4 in it. Anyways, after the update, i try to launch it, and the setup windows comes up asking if i want to submit anonymous info to Microsoft, which i say no to and click finish. Then it goes to the update screen, and the program doesn't load at all. It does this for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint as well. What's going on? I really have some important contacts and emails in there that i can't lose.

Ok, i did that, the same thing happened. I then relaunched it, and it said that: "This identity cannot be opened with this version of Entourage." Then i tried opening up Word, and about 10 seconds after it's open it gives me this: "There is a problem with the Office database." It says further into the message to use the Microsoft Utility application. I was able to find it, and it ran it without a problem, but i'm getting these error messages. What could be the problem, and is there any way that i can get my Entourage identity back?

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, any Identity saved with a 12.1.0 or
later version will not open in 12.0.0 or 12.0.1. Since there was a database
format change in 12.1.0 (SP1), Entourage 12.0.0 or 12.0.1 cannot open a
database saved in the later version.

Entourage 2004 also had a database upgrade from the original release. Once
you upgrade, the Identity will open.

You also might need to move the Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop
and let Entourage create a new one. You can then move your individual
folders from MUD back.

In regards to the updates, that's what put me in this predicament in the first place. I had upgraded to the latest version, and then this started to happen. SO i am still up-to-date, as from what Microsoft updates tells me at least.

You only get the error "This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of
Entourage" if you are not updated. Download and run this script. Post the
contents of the clipboard in the message.

What script are you talking about? There isn't link to anything in your last message.

Ok i ran the script, and all version shown were 12.0.0. Which that kind of puxxled me, because i have a version via DMG for 12.0.1 and when i tried to install that, it said it didn't recognize any versions of Office installed. So i went to Microsoft Autoupdate, and it was the same thing for SP1 (12.1.0). Would i be best for me to remove it then reinstall it? Would saving that Microsoft data folder in my Documents folder be like an Entourage archive?

The AutoUpdater has to be updated before it will recognize any updates.

Download this updater:

966f8a/AutoUpdate-211UpdateEN.dmg>

After installing the AutoUpdater should show the 12.1.0 SP1 updater, then
the 12.1.5 updater.

Would saving that Microsoft data folder in my Documents folder be like an
Entourage archive?

You can drag your Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop and let
Entourage create a new one. Then you can drag the folders back after the
install. The term "Entourage archive" is something entirely different. It's
an export in a special format of your data.

Ok i followed that updater link you gave, and it said that the page couldn't be found. I really need to get this fixed asap, i'm losing a lot of emails right now i have no access to. If i drag the microsoft data folder to the desktop and reinstall it, what exactly would be in that folder?

The page not found issue is a completely separate issue. Quite a few folks
were hit with this not long ago and it had to do with security updates to
servers and is out of Microsoft's control.

Your ISP's DNS servers, which resolve server names to IP addresses so
that your machine can connect, have given your Mac some bad information.

First, try clearing your computer's DNS cache. It's quick and causes no
Harm:

1. Open the Terminal application found in /Applications/Utilities.
2. Enter this command followed by a return:

dscacheutil -flushcache (for Leopard)
lookupd -flushcache (for Tiger)

3. Try your download again. Your machine should have to query your DNS
servers again for an address.

If the above doesn't work then your ISP's DNS servers are still causing
you a problem. Look into using <http://www.opendns.org/> to substitute
your ISP's DNS server addresses with this service's DNS servers. It's
also very simple and will very probably allow you to download your
updates. You may need to run the above Terminal command again after
changing your DNS servers.

You might also consider just using these new DNS server addresses
permanently. See if your speed accessing websites improves and note
whether or not you have fewer or more problems connecting to sites.

Well, i tried accessing the link one 3 different computers, this Mac and 2 other PCs, and all them got the same page not found error. So i'm guessing it's my router. I really do appreciate all the time you're taking to help me out. Should i just try uninstalling it, and replacing the Microsoft folder when i reinstall it and update it?

You can try, but you need to get your server issue fixed. The OpenDNS offers
instructions on setting your router rather than your computer settings.
Everyone I know that uses OpenDNS has been very satisfied with the results.

BTW, did you try to see if Entourage will launch in a new User account. Go
to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New
User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office there.

Yea, i was able to get it to run when i moved the Microsoft folder. But when i moved it back, i got the error again, i'm just wondering if there's a part of my identity that's corrupt.

Did you try rebuilding your database?

D

Diane Ross

Yea i did, it was able to verify it, but the repair failed.

This has gotten so long I'm confused. I need you to refresh....

1. Can you open Entourage at all?

2. How large is your database?

3. Were you able to upgrade?

I'm not sure if you had received my email i sent to you or not, because i haven't heard from you at all. But i did try something. I completely got rid of Office with AppZapper, and installed it again, well, i still wasn't able to update it. I don't understand it.
