Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

Hi,
I'm on an iMac with Entourage 2008. I can't open the Entourage application at all. I get a message that says Entourage has encountered a problem and had to close. I can't open it even when I hold down the shift key.

Does this mean I have to reinstall?? If I have to reinstall the application, how will I keep my data e.g contacts & emails?

Help please??

Thanks
Christel

I'm on an iMac with Entourage 2008. I can't open the Entourage application at
all. I get a message that says Entourage has encountered a problem and had to
close. I can't open it even when I hold down the shift key.

First, test in a new User. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in
Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Does Entourage open here? If no....

This could be an Apple operating error. You might need to download the combo
updater from Apple and run it again rather than using Software Update. Doing
so overwrites potentially problem-causing files. Several users have reported
this fixed some odd problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters
will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or
do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Combo Update
(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

It's possible that you might need to do an "Archive & Install".
Does this mean I have to reinstall?? If I have to reinstall the application,
how will I keep my data e.g contacts & emails?

If you need to re-install, your data will be safe. Entourage stores your
data in the Microsoft User Data folder in Documents. I would advice you to
make a backup for absolutely safety. Anytime you are updating, things can go
wrong so having a backup is always advised.

1) Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down
to disable any startup items.)
2) Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
3 Empty Trash.
4) Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk. See details
here:

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Diane,

Thanks for the help so far. I haven't tried your fix yet but thought I should mention that none of the Microsoft Office apps will launch at all. Is it the same issue as what you suspect?

Warm regards,
Christel

it is the first step in trouble-shooting. It will let us know if the
office installation is corrupt, or if there is something in the
user-specific files that needs correcting.

Please try with a new system user and report back.
