You probably need to update Entourage to the latest version. There was a
problem with the network check code in the earlier versions that hung
entourage for about 2 minutes on quitting if access to the network was
impeded.

Free updaters are available at <http://www.microsoft.com/mac>

Could it be possible that you have one or more of your folders being emptied
when you quit? Check your schedules. This may be the cause of a delay when
quitting, especially if you don't quit very often. I frequently don't quit
from Entourage for days, just putting my TiBook to sleep at night.

Are you disconnecting from the internet before quitting? Entourage (and many
other MS programs) takes a long time to quit if they cannot send secret
information out over the internet. :)

I too have found it quite annoying that it takes so long to quit just
because I am not connected.

I have the latest Microsoft and Apple updates and I still have to
force quit Entourage 50% of the time. I have tried to reinitialize and
zero the drive then install only office and get the same problem. I
also tried disconnecting from the internet by turing off my hub before
quiting and get the same problem. Not sure of what is going on.

Thanks for responding Diane.

The only script I have is to empty the trash after quitting. I don't
have any firewall software installed and the OS X firewall is not
enabled. Do you have any other suggestions? After reinstalling I did
repair permissions.

Thanks!

Try creating a new identity in Entourage (Entourage -> Switch Identity).
Once you're in the new identity, quit. Do you experience the same delay?

If you don't, that indicates the problem is with your Main Identity. Switch
back to your regular identity, and try disabling the "Empty Trash on Quit"
schedule by going to Tools -> Schedules, and un-checking the "Enabled" box.
That will tell whether the schedule is causing the delays.

If the problem is with your identity, try rebuilding the database. First,
go to Entourage -> Turn Off Office Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and
then restart Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog
box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. You might then be able to
re-enable the schedule and see Entourage close at a more reasonable rate.

I also have had Entourage apparently freeze on me numerous times. One thing
I discovered in the Calendar was that I had 28,000 - yes, that's right, 28
thousand - items in my calendar. Now, I do get rather busy but that's
ridiculous.

It turns out that most holidays had replicated up to 732 times (732 was the
record for any one holiday. You know how holidays are set up as an all day
event? Well, somehow the same event was listed multiple times on the same
day. It was slowing down Entourage unbelievably, and it would take multiple
seconds to redraw the screen after deleting one. And think of the
synchronising that had to be done...

Ultimately I did a Find for all Calendar events, sorted by Date, then
selected all the multiples and deleted them in a number of massive batches.
That sped things up markedly. I had previously deleted the Exchange
account, rebuilt the database more times than I care to remember, rebuilt
permissions, etc, etc, etc......

Check all your data carefully. Do you really have what you want to have...?
