Entourage X and Exchange Server

R

I know the new Entourage update improves support for exchange. Our
IS dept categorically refuses to activate POP or IMAP access on the
exchange server. So I run outlook 2001 in Classic mode instead of
Entourage.

Is there a way to use entourage X to connect to an exchange server that
only uses the exchange interface?

Does anyone know if MS has a plan to get entourage fully-connectable
to exchange server?

thanks,
raja

No, IMAP needs to be enabled on the Exchange Server in order for you to use
the Exchange Server features. This is mentioned here:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/exchange_server.html#Anchor-guide>

Even if you only send & receive mail and not use the new Exchange features,
you still need POP or IMAP access set up.

I don't know, but there's no mention of it on the Microsoft site.

If you mean MAPI, the answer is no.

I highly doubt Microsoft will ever support MAPI in Entourage.

Gil - I hope you can perhaps shed some light on why Entourage is
not working for me.

Mail works fine.

However - I cannot get contacts or calendar to synch. It worked the very
first time and then no more.

I have tried reinstalling several times but each time since the calendar and
contact info streams into a folder in the mail hierarchy and not into the
main entourage sections for calendar and contacts. I have to assume this is
a bug? Can you confirm?

I am guessing that my problem is that for some reason I cannot connect to
the free/busy server - I have it set to my-exchange-server/public and no
luck. I do not have Outlook 2003 to use to find the name and the TCP sniffer
recommended doesn't work with secure packets (our OWA is https).

It would seem this software is buggy (why work one minute and then stop?) -
and I would feel better if I knew there was some bug fixing going on - can
you confirm?

Our server admin is fed up with me asking questions (as the Mac is not a
supported platform) so is there any other way you can help me get this
working?

Check out the Exchange page on the Entourage Help Page:

I'll be adding the following to the page ASAP that might help you.

I feel for you, I know it isn't easy being the unsupported Mac guy that
Admins wish would go away.

There is no known problem in Entourage that would cause sync to succeed once
and then subsequently fail.

Calendar and Contact sync is completely unrelated to Free/Busy searches.
Free/Busy searches are sent to the Free/Busy server in the Advanced tab of
the account in Entourage, whereas Calendar and Contact sync work through the
Exchange server listed in the Account Settings tab.

I imagine you've already tried it, but just in case: it sounds like your
server requires SSL to connect, so make sure you have SSL in the directory
tab and in the advanced tab.

You shouldn't have to have IMAP turned on to make this work. I can
connect to our company's exchange server fine in Outlook 2001 without
using any IMAP whatsoever, but Entourage using IMAP will not send
outbound mail off of our Intranet.

Because the client is forced to run IMAP, the Exchange server treats
outbound messages as though it were relaying mail, and because we have
mail relay shut off (appropriately, as mail relaying helps propogate
spam to my knowledge) it will not work.

So, when you say that Entourage is "fully connectable to exchange
server" I must disagree, as making people turn on IMAP and mail relay
on seems hardly adequate. Why is this the only piece of "exchange
support" that REQUIRES IMAP and mail relay on a server?
