Entourage X Can't Rebuild and Won't Open

I've been using Entourage X on Mac OSX 10.2 for 2 1/2 years
successfully. Unfortunately I'm not great at backing up (have never
backed up the database!).

Now Entourage won't open telling me "Entoruage cannot access your data.
to attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your database." But it cannot do
either typical or advanced rebuild and ther error message is:
"Rebuilding failed. A read/write error has occurred (-40).

(Per Micorsoft's online support assistance) I tried removing my
identities folder and reinstalling Office X, but after copying back the
identities folder, problem recurred.

Any suggestions for getting my information (both old e-mails but esp my
contact information)? Would upgrading to Office 2004 allow me to access
the old data?

Thanks a lot!

It sounds quite likely that you have exceeded the size limit for an EvX
database. This was originally 2Gb, but was raised to 4Gb in one of the
updates (and warnings as you approached that limit were also introduced).
Make sure you have upgraded your version of office to 10.1.6, and try the
rebuild again. Unfortunately, once you have exceeded the limit, there is a
very low likelihood of recovering the data :(

You are probably out of luck under Office X, but I've had good success
retrieving Office X corrupted databases by upgrading to Office 2004. Doing
that has saved a four or five databases that would have otherwise been lost
for good, and it has yet to NOT work for me.

Good luck, and remember to back up that Documents:Microsoft User Data folder
from now on, too!

Set your account to delete emails from the server after it has been in the
trash for at least 1 week to 30 days.

Than do a weekly back-up of your Identity. Just use Stuffit to compress it
and save it else where on your computer, or on a Zip Disk. I usually do
both, double up on everything, do not take chances.

If corruptions happens, you will be able use the previous back up files, and
download all the emails in the past week since the last backup.

Cheers!

Thanks - that upgrade worked and I must not have exceeded the limit
(but just close) as i was able to then rebuild the database and I'm up
and running!

Thanks to all for their ideas and suggestions!
