Entourage X: IMAP Mail error

Hello, I am experiencing difficulties using Entourage with a
Exchange/IMAP server:

User starts Entourage (10.1.4 (030702)), and after 20-30 second
receives the popup dialog box: "Action could not be completed. Mai
error." Prior to receiving the dialog box, the user seems to be able t
use Entourage fine, receiving new e-mails. The dialog box is recurrin
and will not stop, Force-Quit of the application is necessary.

I have tried the following solutions:
Per Microsoft's instructions,
1) Typical Rebuild
2) Delete com.microsoft.Entourage.plist from Library/Preferences an
Entourage Preferences and Entourage Settings (10)
3) Removed Microsoft folder from Library/Preferences and Microsof
Fonts

The error still persists. What could be causing this? The user has bee
able to use their e-mail for a long time, this is a fairly new error.
will be happy to provide more details if anything else can be of us

I ended up removing the ~/Library folder to see what would happen if
rebuilt the entire library. After logging out and back in, launchin
Entourage, and supplying passwords, things seemed to mostly work.

I got a few 'invalid user' errors, and a few 'item not found' errors
She then launched Entourage on a different machine, and got a dialo
immediately saying something about OE Rules file being corrupt. Rule
cannot be used. Entourage then quits.

Any ideas

anyone? this is kind of important :(

*EDIT:* Might be worth noting that Entourage 2004 on a differen
computer works absolutely fine, however this person is teaching a quic
course on Entourage X here, and obviously should be using the sam
version of Entourage

Well there you go, you've mentioned the factor that's likely to cause the
problem. Prior to installing Entourage, did that user use Outlook Express?
And if yes, did she import her OE rules into Entourage?

Try deleting the rules in Entourage (Tools>Rules, then switch to the IMAP
tab), and see if that solves the problem. And if Entourage quits
immediately, i.e. it doesn't even give you a chance to remove the rules by
yourself, try removing the Rules file in ~/Documents/Microsoft User
Data/Office X Identites/[the user's main identity]/. If all of this doesn't
work, post back.

By the way, removing ~/Library is generally not a good idea, especially
since Entourage only uses a couple of files in the Library folder. This
might interfere with the system, so try not to move that folder.

And one last idea: when you launch Entourage, open the Progress window
(Cmd+7) to see if there is a specific process running when Entourage quits.

Her Entourage quitting immediately error was rectified when she close
the already-running instance of Entourage on a seperate computer. Th
file was locked and not readable by the second instance. That proble
is fixed.

We are back to the original problem, where Entourage will, after 3
seconds or so, report the error "Action could not be completed. Mai
error." Once this error occurs, her Entourage is no longer functioning
and requires a Force-Quit to close it.

We are on an active directory domain, removing her ~/Library/ did n
permanent damage if it did not work to fix the solution. (Th
~/Library/ was stored on a remote server. Whichever computer she log
into all has the same software, the same profile, etc.

Okay, so what we need to do is isolate the action which causes Entourage to
display this error. As I've suggested, activate the progress window and see
if there is a process running at the time when you get the error message;
this might help identifying the problem.

In case you're impatient, have you tried setting up a new identity just to
see if the IMAP account works in there?

We have many users and many IMAP accounts all set up in the same manner
Some people have issues, some do not. This particular user had no issue
whatsoever until the last week or so. No upgrades or anything have take
place on her account.

I will run the progress thing and report back

There are no pending schedules, is what the progress indicator showed.

I was able to see that before the error occured, the user was able t
send and receive all pending e-mails, and I had enough time to open
couple of e-mails and verify that the connection worked before the Mai
error occurred

Right, that makes things more complicated. Since only some of the machines
seem to be affected, and since you didn't modify Entourage, could it be a
problem with the server itself?

I'm not really an Exchange expert, so that's about as far as I dare go with
my suggestions. Maybe someone else can jump in here. Sorry for not being
able to help you.

More than one copy of Entourage accessing a single identity is _not_
supported. Furthermore, hosting your home directory on a remote volume may
have other issues -- I know there are legacy problems in the other Office
applications involving that, and I'm not sure whether it's one of our
supported environments.

In general, the ORK has more on these sorts of things:

I understand that multiple logins are not supported. My problems ar
experienced with oen login.

After 30 seconds I get the mail error from my first post
