I do not want each message to automatically open upon selection. How do I scroll without each message opening?

What view are you using? 3 pane view ,preview pane below or None. I suspect
None. Change this under View in the menu bar. I suggest 3 pane view. You can
use your scroll bar to scroll through messages and the arrow down/up keys to
move around your messages.
