Entourge in Office 2004 not allowing authentication

P

Peter Keady

Just upgraded from Office X to 2004. So far nothing but nightmares.

I have my email forwarded to my domain service but my ISP is
different. In Enrage X I was able to send and receive mail from my
domain through the ISP by setting my "Accounts" with the proper info.

Now, Enrage says, "Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't
support any of the available authentication methods." Error 17897

Very frustrating - any help?

Who is your ISP and what is the address of the mail server you're trying to
connect to?

If you are using a regular e-mail account, then try this and see if it helps
any:

You will see that error when you have SSL authentication set up in your
account settings when your server doesn¹t really have it. Go to Tools >
Accounts, click on your e-mail account and select Edit. Click on the Click
here for advanced receiving options and make sure This POP service requires
a secure connection (SSL) is not checked. Do the same thing for Click here
for advanced sending options. If you need secure sending, check the SMTP
server requires authentication. Check the Use same settings as receiving
mail server option unless you know you have a different password for your
SMTP.

Both of the SSL options (sending and recieving) have been, and are
currently unchecked, tried to send an email and get that same error:

"Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the
available authentication methods"

"Error: -17897"

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

I'm getting the same thing. It's highly annoying and makes Entourage 2004
UNUSABLE. The same SMTP auth works in Apple's Mail. What's up? I'll be
calling MS this weekend to get an answer and post it here. I haven't been
able to find anything on the web about this problem that's even close to
making sense.

Thanks,
Jason

I do not believe it is a problem with Entourage 2004. My e-mail
accounts (earthlink, .mac, work) worked fine with my cable modem.
When I switched to BellSouth, I stopped being able to send e-mail. I
think BellSouth is the culprit. I just got off the phone with
BellSouth help -- I had to speak with a supervisor to get a potential
answer: unfortunately I am not at my home computer to check its
validity. Anyway, here is what he said: need to use
"mail.bellsouth.net" as your SMTP sending mail server and a valid
BellSouth account/password under outgoing adv settings. Hope this
works.
