Erratic behaviour of PPT

I have been very surprized by erratic behaviour of PowerPoint
(Office XP). In some unspecified situations there is changed
mapping of keyboard and instead of moving, when using arrows,
there are some ASCII characters. What is the possible origin
of this behaviour? (There is antivirus program and updates are
current.)

Does this happen in any other applications? Sounds like a Windows or
hardware problem, but I might be wrong...
