Erratic fonts on viewing new messages (Office X)

Recently some of my incoming messages are displayed in bizarrely large
fonts - with erratic changes of font in the middle (i.e. suddenly two
lines of a very small font, etc.). These are apparently all MIME
messages - but Help only explains MIME problems with attachments...
these are all the messages themselves. Can't see what I'm supposed to
do with this - I've gone through various preferences, and it just
appears that some people's formatted e-mails are given truly weird
formats in a way that I can't change.

You will only see differing fonts and sizes in HTML messages, of course, not
in plain text messages. And the font sizes will be as the sender sent them.
There can be differences between Windows and Mac resolutions which
exaggerate the differences on the opposite platform.
