Erratic selection of messages in inbox

After my IMAP client checks for new messages (I have it set to check
often) the currently selected messge jumps to some other message in
the vicinity of the one that has been selected. This gets to be very
irritating, as I then have to find the message I was working with. Has
anybody else seen this behavior? Suggestions as to dealing with it?

An addendum: I'm running Entourage 10.1.4 on system 10.8.2
