Error 1406

Friends PC running XP innundated with Spyware and Adware,
have cleared those (all 10k of them) Office XP registry
infected. When re-installing Office get Error 1406 setup
cannot write the value threadsensitive to the registry
key etc... online MS fix is for windows 2000 pc's.
Anyone know where the XP fix is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
