Error -16999

K

Keith Brooks

All my mail accounts are working except my main identity which when I click
on ³Send & Receive² gives me an error message of:

³Could not retrieve mail from the account "Keith."

The POP server returned an unexpected reply to a command that Entourage
issued.

Error: -16999²

I tried to do the MS Update to 10.1.5 but it just gives me the beach ball
from hell once it shows 9 files to install and hangs on my new 200Gig hard
drive.

Running Panther, have made sure all MS applications are not running, Norton
Antivirus disabled.

I tried running Apple¹s Mail.App and it works fine. I use Entourage because
I simply like it better and it does newsgroups where Mail does not.

Any ideas? Many thanks!

This behavior can occur if a damaged message on your e-mail server prevents
access to the rest of your e-mail.

Go to Tools/Accounts/that account/Edit/Options. Check "Allow online access".
That puts an icon of your account in the Folder List.

Click on the account
icon. You're now looking at the messages on the server. The oldest message
is probably the culprit. Delete from server using the online access.

We have the error listed as just 16999 on the web site. From your error
description it sounds like the same one. Our listing could be in error for
the negative sign. Let me know if this works.

If you have not installed Microsoft Office v. X 10.1.2 Update and Microsoft
Exchange Update for Entourage® X (Office v. X 10.1.4 Update) , you must do
so before installing Microsoft Office v. X 10.1.5 Update.

If you continue to have problems, use "Remove Office" and then apply
updates. Some users have found that disconnecting from the internet for
installing 10.1.2 helps.

More info on updaters here:
Running Panther, have made sure all MS applications are not running, Norton
Antivirus disabled.

I would not install any Norton applications on your hd, just run from your
CD.

Thank you for the quick response!!

I had already upgraded to 10.1.4 and with the current 16999 problem I
thought 10.1.5 could be the solution.

I'll try the suggested solutions and let you know.

Why would you not install Norton on a hard disk? I'm using Systemworks with
Personal Firewall and NAV.

Thanks again for the help!

Nope, same error message comes up, won't allow me access to the messages on
the server.

I'll try to get in through the Webmail portal that Shaw Cable has and let
you know what happens.

Thanks for the help!

Couldn't delete the offending email even through the Shaw Webmail or through
mail2web.com so I called Shaw and they deleted the message.

All is well, thanks for the speedy help!

Entourage's version will still be 10.1.4 after the 10.1.5 update anyway: the
10.1.5 update doesn't modify Entourage (but it still shouldn't hang when
applying).

I'm glad you finally got the problem message deleted. It must have been a
"doozie".
