Error 4359 when verifying database

Steve Pederson

I had left my computer on all night (with Entourage open). When I got up the
next day, my mac would not wake up. I had to manually shut it down. When I
restarted, I had a message that my Office database was damaged. I first
tried to verify my database, but it wouldn't verify. Instead, I got this
message:

An error occurred while attempting to verify your database

An unknown error (4359) occurred.

I rebuilt the database. When I opened the new Main Identity, there was
nothing there - a completely blank slate. When I try to open up the backed
up identity, I get an error message saying that Entourage cannot access the
database.

I looked at the MS web site, but the solution seemed to be for Office 2001,
and I am using Office 2004. There was mention that there could be a problem
with the preference file in the Identity folder, but there is no preference
file in the Identity folders.

Any ideas?

What version of Office / Entourage is this?

What version Mac OS X?

Try moving this file to your desktop (~ means your home folder: /Users/you):

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Entourage.prefs.plist

There are also these two files:

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

Versions:
MS Entourage 2004: 11.3.6
Mac OS X: 10.3.9

I tried moving the following files to the desktop:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/com.microsoft.Entourage.prefs.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

When I opened the application, a dialog box appeared asking me which
identity I wanted to use. I chose the one that had recently been rebuilt.
Entourage said that there was an error - that it could not access the
database and suggested rebuilding the database. The database utility opened
up, and I tried verifying the database. Again, I got the error message,
4359, saying that there was an error verifying the database.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it before, but I did a "get info" on that
identity and it is about 1.4 GB in size.

I also rebuilt the database again and still get the same errors.

I also rebuilt the database again and still get the same errors.

Trash the files. Be sure to follow these directions:

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

When your Mac is forced to shut down, bad things can happen. It's possible
your database was saved in a damaged state or the entire database could have
been placed in "lost and found" or lost forever.

First look inside your Microsoft User Data folder located in your Documents
folder. Inside your 2004 Identity folder you should see your backed up
Identity.

Main [Backed up date and time will be shown] e.g. Main [Backed up 1-21-2007
13.35]

Check the size of the database in the backed up Identity. This will show you
if the original still exists. Compare this to the size of the rebuilt
database. Let us know what you find.

You can rename the Identity so it shows as the original (move the new one to
the desktop so you don't overwrite) then restart Entourage and let it open
the original. Does it open?
