Error 5501

I

indago

I recently changed ISP from Earthlink to Copper.net. I reconfigured my
Entourage Email settings and now cannot send Emails. I can receive them OK.
I get an error message:

5.7.1 This system is not configured to relay mail from <[email protected]>
to <[email protected]> for 64.209.146.28

Error: 5501

Everything worked OK in the Emails with Earthlink, but not with the new
Copper.net. What is the error 5501?

Change the SMTP to your copper.net setting.

Relaying means that you are trying to send a message through a mail server
without being logged in to that server, and the people who run the server
have chosen to disallow that to prevent spammers from using the server.

Example. You have an account on Comcast and you also have an account via
your domain hosted on pair.com. You cannot use the SMTP for your pair
account to send via your ISP host Comcast. This is relaying. You can use
your Comcast SMTP to send your pair mail.

I am using the Entourage version 9.0.1

Here is a header from an Email after I made some changes:

From: indago <[email protected]>

To: Jim Burns <[email protected]>

Subject: Email Check

The error message that I got was:

Error: Mail could not be sent using the account "indago."

Explanation: Mail Error. The server did not understand the request.

Error: 5500

Error: 5500

You are showing two different error there - the server is returning a 5501
error because relaying is not permitted. This usually means you need to
change the 'Authentication' settings. Open the mail account settings, and in
the first screen, click on the 'advanced sending server settings' button and
try different authentication setting - you probably want 'server requires
authentication' and 'same as receiving server' switched on, but the actual
settings required will depend on your mail host set up.

The other error reported (5500) is a generic "something went wrong, but I
don't know what" type of error, and may be related to the authentication.
Fix that first and see if this one goes away.

I have an older version of Netscape, v 4.7, on this Mac computer. The
Netscape system has the Communicator, which is the Email system. I
reconfigured this for the Copper.net and sent an Email to my daughter. It
went through the Copper.net just fine. I have also tried the Outlook
Express Email system on this Mac and I get the same error as with the
Entourage. Either these Microsoft systems are rejecting the Copper.net, or
Copper.net is rejecting the Microsoft systems.
