Error in autoexec

B

B

I have just installed the whole of Office 2000. When I load Word I get
an error message. The error message dialog box is entitled -

"Microsoft Visual Basic",

and the message itself is -

"Compile error in hidden module: AutoExec"

I have searched for autoexec and cannot find it. When I exit from Word
I get a similar message.

I am running Windows 2000 Pro.

Any help would be very welcome.

Thanks

Brian

PS

I have uninstalled Office and reinstalled just Word and Excel, and there
is no error!

This is probably caused by an add-in which was installed in Word as a result
of loading a different application (such as Adobe Acrobat). Add-ins are
stored in the Word startup folder, which is usually C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup. If you navigate to that folder, you
may find a number of Microsoft Word Templates there. Close Word and then
move them somewhere else. When you re-open Word, the error should be gone.
Now close Word again, and add the templates back one at a time, re-opening
Word each time until you find the one causing the error.

Having found the file causing the error, you then try and work out which
application installed it and then contact technical support for the vendors
of that application, and see about getting a new copy of the template that
has a proper digital signature which Word will recognise. Alternatively, if
it is an application you don't need to have integrated into Word, just leave
the template out of the startup folder.

Many thanks.

I will put back the rest of Office and proceed as you suggest.

I have the exact problem.

I followed your instructions ,, BUT I did NOT find anything in the
folder that is indicated in STARTUP folder listed under TOOLS/Options.

I ran a ANTI Virus check and found 2 viruses in 4 files BUGBEAR and
DIALER.

Would reinstalling Word 2000 repair the error. Should I back up my
data and remove all signs of Word 2000??

Thank you

Hi Yossie,

There are two folders which Word treats as startup folders. One of them is
user-specific, and is shown by the Startup folder in the Tools Options
dialog. The other is the Startup folder within the program installation
folder. This is normally C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup.
you need to look in both locations.

If both of those folders are empty, then the other possible cause is that
there is an AutoExec macro in your normal.dot template. Find out the
location of your User Templates folder from the Options dialog. Close Word,
and navigate to the folder using Windows Explorer. There will be a tile
called "Normal" or "Normal.dot". Move it to some other folder. Restart Word.
See iff the problem has gone away.

If the problem is in normal.dot, then it is very likely that a virus caused
the problem. Update your anti-virus software and run another full scan
