Error message help

P

Peter Perry

In the last few days, I've run into a problem with
FrontPage. While editing my site online, I attempt to
import a photo from a local disk. The dialog opens and
begins to display the "My Photos" folder... then suddenly
I get an error dialog that reads as follows:

An unexpected error occured: Not enough memory available
to complete the operation. Close other programs to make
more memory available then try again.

I've done nothing differently than usual and I've
iunstalled no new programs. I have tried shutting
everything down and doing this operation with only FP
running. I get the same message. I've noticed no
slowdowns in anything, no memory drains, etc. Any
sugestions?

Thanks.

Delete all your temporary internet files in IE (Tools, Internet Options) and
then find and delete the FrontPage Temporary Directory - FrontPageTempDir
(on Windows XP it's under Documents and Settings/<your name>/Local
Settings/Temp), and so a search for all *.web files and delete them, then
reboot your PC and see if it works.

Hi David:

Thanks. I did what you suggested (twice) but still have the problem. The
first time I insert a picture from file and save the modified page, it
works. The second time, I get the message. Even if I abort the first save,
delete the imserted pic and choose another, I get the error message.

This is happening with several different websites, so I assume it is a local
problem on my machine.

BTW, I also went into settings and optimized my display settings for
performance, and verified that WinXP is setting my virutal memory settings.

Anymore suggestions?

Dave:

I'm running XP SP1, and FP2002 SP-2 on a Toshiba Tecra S1, P-M Centrino, 1.4
Ghz with 768 MB. Never have had any memory problems before this...

I just mentioned the Virtual Memory thing cause I thought I ought to double
check that possibility.

I just remembered that I ahd deleted a Wupdate for High-mat CD stuff, so I
am reainstalling that to see if that will tweak things back to normal.

OK, now it gets interesting...

Still have the problem with the memory error, but even worse, when I attempt
to save the editted page with the new image, and the Save embedded files
dialog opens, I click OK and FP seems to freeze up at that point. The only
way out is crashing out.

This has happened multiple times on at least two different web servers.

I'm at a loss to think what else to do...

Thanks again.

Actually, a bit of a correction. If I wait long enough, FP returns a message
that says "the server returned a response FP couldn't parse. Check with sys
adm to see if FP server extensions are properly installed." I'm pretty sure
they are installed correctly since this is happening at two different hosts.

Peter, have you tried un-installing and re-installing FrontPage or doing a
repair from the help menu?

David:

I did a repair FP yesterday. The problem still persists, so I think I'm
going to uninstall and reinstall FP. Maybe that will do the trick.

I'm also going to do a full back up this afternoon in case I need to
reinstall the OS.
