Error message upon Word startup

When starting Word I get an error message "Microsoft Word has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I had a
simillar problem on my home machine and was able to correct it by renaming
the normal file in Word\STARTUP. I was going to try the same but the STARTUP
folder is empty. Is this normal?
