Hello-

I have a problem with my Entourage Database and am looking for
additional suggestions.

Mac G4 running 10.2.8, Office X.

My main hard drive failed to mount. Of course I had everything backed
up but lost it in the process as I had to make my backup drive my main
drive. I had to use DataRescue X to get the data off my backup drive
that wouldn't mount. Here's what happens after I try to retrieve
everything.

I start up Entourage and get the error: "Entourage cannot access your
data. To attemp to fix the problem, rebuild your database."

I try to rebuild and get this: "Compacting failed. The end of the file was
reached."

Then it suggests an "Advance Build." I try again. Then: "Rebuilding
failed. It is likely that your database cannot be repaired."

I downloaded EntourAid. It seems to be able to recover some files, but
as far as I can tell, it can't recover any files that were inside folders and
subfolders. I even tried the backup of my backup from July. No luck.

Any suggestions, or has the proverbial stuff hit the fan?

Thanks in advance for your help.

First thing to do is make sure your office installation is up to date -
there have been incremental improvements to the rebuild routine through the
update process:
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/version/index.html>

Then, if the problem persists, try deleting the 'Microsoft' folder from
~/Library/Preferences (where ~ is your home directory), log out and back in
again and try the rebuild afresh.

Barry-

Thanks for your reply. I did upgrade as requested. I even deleted the
Preference files as requested.

I was able to "rebuild" my old/original database file. It seems to work
and go through. When I open up Entourage, I can see a few of my
original folders (none are in sub-folders) but there are no e-mail
messages within these folders. Seems like a start, but not sure why it
doesn't complete the process.

Is there something I missed? Please advise if you can. Thanks again for
your help.

Sincerely,
Chris

Barry-

Here's an update to what's going on. Upon further examination, I
discovered that my original Database file was incomplete.

I re-resurected a "fresh" copy of my Database and went from there. I
cannot do a "typical" rebuild as I get a "Compacting Failed. Unknown
error (4359) occured." error. It begins the process and goes through
the entire compacting of over 16,000, but fails. Then it asks if I want to
do an advance rebuild.

If I do, I can retrieve some (read: very little) of my data, but I get many
of my older folders, not many new, none in sub-folders, and hardly any
e-mails.

This is better than before, but still not right. I hope there is an easy fix
for this one.

Thanks again,
Chris

I never did figure this out, but I was able to resurect my backup hard
drive, so I don't need to anymore.

If anyone has an answer, I'd love to hear it, but it isn't neccessary.

Thanks for your help.
