Hello there:

Been looking all over re this client issue. Workstation has XP Pro SP2,
Office '03 SP2. Workstation keeps freezing up or crashing when in
Excel/Outlook. Even log is littered w/ 1002 errors. This is a pretty basic
setup w/ no AD, just a simple Windows workgroup w/ Server '03 Any ideas,
been looking & others seem to have this prob too, but w/o a resolution.
Thank you.

First, this newsgroup isn't your best bet for technical questions on
any particular Office application. Crossposting (not multiposting) to
microsoft.public.excel and the corresponding Outlook newsgroup would be
a better idea. I'm crossposting my response to the Excel ng.

How is Office installed on client machines? By scripting the Office
install (SETUP.EXE) or by copying an image with Office already
installed? If the latter, any errors on the server providing the image
to new clients could corrupt client installs, so your first step in
that case would be running disk drive and RAM diagnostics on the
server.

On the other hand, if you're installing Office from the Office product
CDs, then run hard disk and RAM diagnostics on the client machines
before reinstalling. Flaky disk sectors or RAM could cause runtime
problems.

Next, open Excel in safe mode (if you're a support engineer, you should
know how to do this or how to find out about it in online help) and see
if the problem persists. If so, it's reinstall time, but see previous
comments.

Appreciate the response. I installed Office '03 right off the cdrom.
The workstation is a brand new Dell, so I doubt it's bad hardware, but
I'll anyways check. Any other ideas? Thank you.

Did you try running Excel in safe mode to see whether the problem
persists?

Does Excel crash immediately after opening? If not, what's the user
doing when it does crash?
