Excel 2003 error "file format is not valid"

When opening an excel document, i get this error "file format is not valid."
This document had a .xls extension. The document was edited two days ago.
We also tried restoring it from backup, two previous versions and each time
we get the same error when trying to open it.

Hunch: does the file open in Word?
