excel 2007's behavior when opening an XLS

can't seem to find an answer elsewhere thought i'd try here.

simply...
1. generate an md5 hash of any given XLS;
2. open the same XLS in excel 2007;
3. close it w/o changing or saving it;
4. re-run the md5 hash generator against the seemingly-unchanged XLS &
get a new value

why?

this doesn't occur in excel 2003

please advise
