Excel 97 unhide col A & row 1

Excel 97 instructions for unhiding first row and column is to edit, goto, A1, then format, column, unhide. This does not work. Have I missed something here? I cannot get columns A & B and row 1 to unhide

Column width may be set very low. Try the goto, A1, then Format -- Column --
Width.

I am so sorry. The instructions do work, and my problem was that I had the top few rows frozen out of sight. Oops! Sorry for the premature post.
