You could perhaps create a range and then use that in the formula.

=AVERAGE(myrange)

While holding down the CRTL key, use the mouse to select each cell you wish
to include in the average calculation. Then in the Name Box in the upper
left hand corner of your screen, type in a name for the range. (I use DATA
as my name in the example below

Then use that Name in the formula instead of listing the individual cells.

=AVERAGE(DATA)

Note that the Named Range is not referenced with ""'s

So in what way are they not contiguous? Give us an example, eg is it that you
have every other cell in say Row 2 with a number and you want to average those?
Lots of ways to skin a cat, but we need as much info as you can give to be more
precise.
