I have just installed Entourage (2 weeks ago) and when I
receive an xls attachment it will open in SPSS and SPSS
converts it to its format and I can read it. What is going
on here?
The OS's file system is confused. Excel attachments (all attachments of any
type) received by email from a Windows or Unix computer don't contain Mac
file-type info. The file system has to know which app to use for the .xls
extension, and it's guessing wrong.
All you need to do is this: save one of those attachments to your desktop.
Select it and control-click (right-click) it and select Get Info (or press
cmd-I). In the Get Info window select "Open With" and change the popup from
SPSS to Excel X. Then click the "Change All" button. From now on all .xls
files will open in Excel.
