Excel Embedded in Powerpoint lost

I have an (inherited) Powerpoint presentation based on 12 embedded (not
linked) Excel sheets. This seems a very unstable solution.

Reçently we converted to Office 2003. Now the embedded excel sheets won't
work.
- First Powerpoint proposes to "fix the problem" by reinstalling something.
- Secondly (after the fix), Powerpoint says there's not enough memory.

My outsourced HP tech support augmented the virtual memory and says it's not
a
memory problem (even though he didn't propose to increase the physical
memory).

The support guy insists it's due to som links in the embedded excel sheet,
which point to a no longer existing directory on a network drive. This
happened before, to me, but never blocked opening an Excel file.

Does anyone have a clue to recoveryng the object or converting it to an
Excel sheet ?

I wouldn't mind taking a look at the file if you can mail it to me - Shyam
