Excel or Mouse Issues?

I have seen a few posts regarding the problem of the mouse being stuck in
"select" mode, where the only way to get anything done is to do an "end task".

Most answers seem to suggest that the mouse driver needs to be reinstalled.
I have been having the same problem and will try a mouse driver reinstall,
but I am curious (and maybe a little skeptical) as to why a mouse issue would
only affect Microsoft EXCEL and no other applications.

I'd love to get some input on that. Thanks!
