Exchange account in Entourage 2004 acting like a POP account - help

Subject: Exchange account acting like POP account

I have my Exchange account connecting in Entourage 2004. it worked
great for two days, but now it is acting like a POP account in that new
messages are being copied to the Inbox on the computer, and then
automatically moved to the Deleted Items folder on the server.

What's bizarre is that there are no rules in place to create that
behavior. The account is correctly set up as an Exchange account, not
a POP account, so in the account setup area there is not even an option
to delete messages from the server after they are read on this computer
as there is in the POP account setup menu.

Anyone know why Entourage 2004 would be performing this action? It's
very
annoying since it means that only one computer has messages in the
right place, and important messages are ending up as deleted on the
server.

I've been having the exact same problem after connecting Entourage 2004
to my Exchange 2003 SP2 mailbox for months now and I have had to resort
to using the Mac Mail client in IMAP mode to read any of my Exchange
mail on a Mac (sans OWA). This strange behavior completely emptied my
Exchange Inbox and it is difficult to copy mail from local folders on
the Mac back to the Inbox because the mail comes right back down again.
This is massively frustrating. Does anyone have any idea why this
happens? There's no "deliver mail to" setting as in Outlook that I can
find. I am using all the latest Office patches. I have seen this
problem posted elsewhere, but no one seems to have an answer.
