Much to my surprise, the .vcs file from a link on my company's intranet
("Add event to my Outlook Calendar"), which I knew wouldn't work on its own,
opens by default with iCal! What's more, iCal offers to add the event to my
Entourage calendar!
Is there a simple Applescript to give Entourage the ability to handle .vcs
links without having to save them to disk and open them with iCal?
What you should try is:
1) Drag one .vcs attachment to your desktop to make a .vcs file.
2) Do a Get Info on it (right-click or control-click, choose Get Info).
3) In "Opens With", choose Entourage.
4) Click "Change All".
Then, as a test, double-click it. (Or if you have an earlier version than
Entourage 11.2, drag it onto the Entourage icon in the dock, and go looking
for it in the calendar.) I'm not certain that this will work - it may not.
It definitely _does_ work for .ics files, because Entourage understands
..ics, and saves and imports its own events as .ics. In future, .ics
attachments appear in email messages with Entourage icons, and you can just
double-click them to have them open as events in the Entourage calendar,
with no need to save as files to the desktop. (You might even be able to
drag them into the main window without opening them, not certain.)
But this may well not work with .vcs attachments, since I'm not positive
that Entourage will convert .vcs to .ics and make an event. Try it with that
saved .vcs file and see. If not, do a Get Info again and change Opens With
back to iCal and Change All. Then you'd have to use iCal as an intermediary:
double-click .vcs attachments to save in iCal, then drag the new event out
of iCal to your desktop where it becomes an .ics file. If you have
previously set .ics files to open in Entourage via Get Info/Change All, you
should be able to drag the .ics file into Entourage, or onto the dock, or
maybe even double-click it (if it appears with an Entourage, not iCal icon.
Otherwise you'd have to Get Info/Opens With.) This will only work in Tiger's
iCal 2.0, where you can drag out individual events to make .ics files - you
can't do that in Panther.
