Exchange Server denies outgoing messages

I am using Entourage X (10.1.4) in Mac OS X (10.2.8) on a G4-400 (second
generation) connected to ADSL through an Airport. I am connecting to my
company's Exchange server through a VPN.

I can connect to the server, receive e-mails, update my calendar and
contacts, I can even move e-mails from local folders to the server, but I
cannot send e-mails through the Exchange Server. Each time I send an e-mail,
I get an error message that says:
5.1.0 Sender Denied
Error: 5554

I can move messages from my local outbox onto the server and place them in
my drafts folder and send them with another application.

I don't have this trouble through Outlook 2001, Outlook 98 on my PC or OWA.

I have deleted my account locally and then set it up again. I have checked
my settings under SMTP‹ turning SSL and authentication on and off in
different combinations. I have even tried setting up a different IMAP
account on the same machine and using that to send messages.

I'm not sure what else to do and I'm not finding any help. Is anyone else
having this problem? Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks for the help. I'm so tired of being "denied."

I suspect your server detects that you are not on its domain and refuses
to relay for you. You might try to use the SMTP of your ISP instead.

I don't have this trouble through Outlook 2001, Outlook 98 on my PC or OWA.

It makes sense that OWA is working. The PC does not use the same
protocol, so it does not quite exclude my explanation.
I have deleted my account locally and then set it up again. I have checked

:-\
Can you use your ISP's SMTP instead ???

Thanks Corentin,

I've tried that.

When I log on to the VPN, I cannot access my local ISP. I usually get a
report back that the server could not be located. The same happens even with
Web browsers.

When I'm on the VPN, all my traffic goes through that server. I have an
e-mail account with my ISP set up in Mail. When I try to use that while on
the VPN, I have to use the Exchange Server to send messages, because Mail
cannot locate the ISP's SMTP server.

Any other thoughts?

It can probably locate it, but then, your ISP considers you're
connecting from outside and won't relay :->>>

Use sendmail on your mac and specify "localhost" as your SMTP. THen your
own Mac becomes an SMTP server.
Configuring sendmail is really tedious so you might want to go for a
shareware like "sendmail enabler" to do the work for you.
