Exchange SMTP que sends multipule emails only from Entourage

L

We have recently moved users from one exchange server to a new
exchange server(2003) running in a Front office, Back office set up.
When Entourage user's (Outlook users have no issues) send an email to
the out side world it gets routed to the FO server, via the BO server
smtp connector.

The issue is that the smtp que that routes the email to the front end
server ,it seams that the hand off does not compleat correctley..
It will retry the email an infinite amount of times. The recipent of
the email will recive the 100's of emails untill I delete the email
from the smtp connector.

Any Ideas ?

This is probably be better addressed in one of the Exchange forums
you've where you've posted this such as microsoft.public.exchange.admin
or maybe you should also try microsoft.public.exchange.connectivity.

I'm not sure why it happens just to Entourage users but it would help if
you provided some more information about how they're connecting. Are
they connecting as Exchange clients or are they connecting via POP/SMTP
or IMAP? What versions of Entourage and Exchange Server are you using?

We are using exchange 2003 on a 2003 box
Clients are using entourage with all the latest patches. And using the
exchange client.
It only happends when the user is off site. The users do use the exch-
bo.domainname reference instead they use the owa/exchange reference.

Hi Leslie!

That information does help. We definitely need an Exchange Server expert
to chime in on this one.

I have no idea if this applies but since you mention Outlook users do
not have this issue the solution may lie in the protocols being used.
When Outlook connects to the front-end server it's using RPC over HTTP.
Entourage uses WebDAV, which is a different protocol but still travels
over HTTP.

I would really expect any message composed in either Entourage or the
OWA interface to have similar results. Have you tested that?

Well heres the very strange thing...
we do not have RPC over HTTP running....
We get the entourage users to log into owa and they only send one
email, but they send multipul via owa/exchange. I have also tried just
the owa reference and it sends multipul times.

WebDAV might be the issue ? where is the best place to read up on
this ?

Hi Leslie!

If your Outlook clients are connecting to your front-end server from
outside your company network then you must be using RPC over HTTP.
Again, I'm not an Exchange Server expert but I'm 92.1% sure of this.

The fact that messages sent via either Entourage or OWA confirms this is
not an Entourage issue but purely and Exchange Server issue.

Not knowing the cause of your problem I can only point you to what I
think is some relative information about WebDAV. Have a look at this
page on Microsoft's website
<http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms985516.aspx>.

If someone with more Exchange Server expertise doesn't respond to your
message by tomorrow evening I'll try to ask some folks to come look at
your posts.

Hope this helps! bill

Thanks for your help.
but in reguards to what you have said I think I have miss lead you.
All outlook clients either pop their emails, or use VPN to connect
into the network to gain access to the exchange.
Only the Entourage clients using the Exchange server reference of owa/
exchange have this issue.
I see the smtp que in the Back Exchange connecting to the Front
Exchange but it seams not to hand off correctly. After a period of
time the Delivery Failures inceases, untill i delete the email from
the que. The email gets deliverd to the external site but it gets
deliverd X amount of times.
Also the name of the que looks strange for me it is a series of
letters that do not make any sence to me. I thought it was a dns issue
but it has been tested and it is ok.

Many thanks

Leslie
