Exchange sychronization causing lockups?

I've just deployed Entourage 2004 to several users (configured as
Exchange accounts). Almost immediately, I received several complaints
that every few minutes, Entourage is trying to Sync, which seems to
completely take over the CPU and cause other applications to stop
responding and/or quit. I've tried changing the synchronization
options to "Don't synchronize items to server", but that doesn't seem
to help.

Has anyone experienced this problem, or have any suggestions? All I
could think of for now is to switch them to IMAP.

That might happen for a little while as Entourage syncs the account for
th forst time (it sometimes appears to be doing a batch of data every
five minute aor so, hence the cyclic lockup). Once everything is in
sync, it shouldn't happen anymore.
