Exchange2000 - auto reply

M

Mauro

My boss e-mail is full of spam. He's asking me to modify his address and set
an automatic reply on his old mail address.
I think I have to create a fake win2K account and assign it my boss old mail
address. Then set an auto reply on this user. I have tried with Outlook rule
wizard (server side rule) but I get an error and the rule doesn't work.
How can I manage this issue?

Please help, my boss is really making pressure on me to solve this problem!!

What error do you get? With Outlook 2002 and 2003 you can create a
serverside rule that replys to all messages. Set the action to have the
server reply with a specific message and to delete the message (to prevent
the mailbox from getting full). Make sure you set some exceptions (for
instance based on the subject field so it will not reply on subject with
e.g. reply, failed, undeliverable, etc...) otherwhise you could create
endless mailloops between two mailservers and those can be a real threat to
the mailservers!

Additionally you might want to start thinking about implementing
spam-filters on your mailserver.

I already have an AntiSpam (Sybari) but it is not a Bayesan one. So many
spam mails pass by.
I tried to set the Rule with Outlook 2002, but it did not work, saying there
was a connectiuon problem with the server.
I have read somewhere that Outlook rules don't work fine, so it should be
better to implement some script or other similar stuff.

Rules work fine by me.

What is the exact error you got? What steps do you take to set the rule?
Make sure you start Outlook with the mailbox you want to set the Wizard Rule
on as the Outlook Today folder (default mailbox).

Note that using autoreply rules on the old address will send a message to
all the spammers and likely increase his spam....

On the old address indeed. But I figure that you'll drop that account after
a month or so just to notify people you've got a new address? If not; you
should ;-)
It probably isn't wise to put your new address in the auto-reply though.

I presumed that this was precisely what they wanted to do :-(

Ehy men! Don't fight! ;-)

Yes the idea was to use the old address to auto-send info about the new
address, by mean of a jpg attachment to the mail. I assume many spammers use
automatic programs so they don't look at the replies and very often the
e-mail address is faked.

I have succeeded in setting the auto reply. The problem was in Exchange
Server where I had to check for permit auto reply and out of office reply to
pass through!

By now I have stopped the procedure and I'm going to test Sybar Advanced
Spam Manager which use a Bayesan engine to fight spam. I hope to solve the
issue in this way!

Thanks you all, have a nice week-end!

Lanwench and I don't fight! The recommendation was towards you; not Lanwench
:)

God to hear you have things configured the way you want it now.

Enjoy your weekend!

I hope he doesn't request that the auto-reply contain his new address so
that he'll be telling some of the SPAMmers how to reach him again.
