Expand / collapse not working in message pane

I find a glitch with the new expand / collapse "small navigation buttons".
They do not work for me in any of the folders under "folders on my
computer".

Otherwise, all other folders, news, mail views, calendar, task, etc work as
they should. Unfortunately the place I could really use this feature is in
the inbox.

Anyone else have this issue?, any suggestions?, news?

I wonder if you might be misunderstanding "navigation buttons" - perhaps
you're hoping that means "toolbar buttons"? Toolbar buttons are not
configurable or adjustable. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Navigation buttons are those six buttons at the top left of the main window,
that take you to Mail, Address Book, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, Projects (or in
Entourage X and 2001: Custom Views for the last one). The icons are new but
the buttons - and the ability to reduce them in size - are not new. That
preference, to reduce the size, also exists in Entourage X.

So what do you mean by "they don't work for me in any of the folders under
"folders on my computer"? When you're reading mail in a local folder, and
you have the navigation buttons set to small size, you can't move to the
Address Book or Calendar by clicking the appropriate button, but when
they're set at large size you can? I've never, ever heard of anyone having
that problem. That's why I think I must be misunderstanding, or else you
maybe you mean different buttons, not the navigation buttons.

Known issue with 'preview pane off' or 'preview pane under', when you have
hidden the first column in the message list - 'online status'. Turn display
of that column back on and the triangles will work again.

Hmmm. Triangles. How'd you know he meant "disclosure triangles", Barry? (I'm
sure you're right.) These are neither new (they go back to Entourage 2001
and Outlook Express before that) in the Folders List, nor does the new pref
for "small navigation buttons" have anything to do with them. I guess
"expand / collapse" was the give-away?

Wait - you both mean the disclosure triangles for message group headers when
in 3-column view (Preview Pane at Right) when "Show in Groups" is on, yes?
"Show in Groups" is new in 2004, right. But I can't replicate the problem.
Expand All and Collapse All in View menu works fine for me even when I've
removed Online Status column while in Preview Pane Below (and when I go back
to Preview Pane at Right in that same state). What is it I'm not doing here
to replicate?

I don't seem to be very good at divining what people mean unless they spell
it out with full details. Sorry.

Thanks, Barry for "divining" the problem - although "small navigation
buttons" was misleading (I mistakenly took that from general views in
preferences) "expand / collapse" was, I think, a pretty good clue.

I have always used the 'preview pane below' view, and I do immediately turn
off 'on line status' as I have broadband. So I thought your advice would be
right on.

Alas, in 'preview pane below' with 'online status' showing, the carrots
still do nothing for the folders under "folders on my computer".

The upshot is that I find I really like the 'preview pane right' view, so,
until the issue with carrots is fixed, I'll just look at messages that way.
Should the imminent replacement of my monitor with a new 16:9 ratio flat
screen occur before that happens, I'll probably never go back.

Thanks again.

Enable the Links column (View > Columns > Links) in each of your folders.
Then the disclosure triangles for the groups in those folders should work.
