explorer, outlook and other progammes failure to open

Having recently installed XP (as an upgrade and I believe
registered it) and mcafee firewall the system was working
ok.

Last week the following started to happen:

Ø I can log on to the PC ok and can open up certain
applications such as BT broadband, start – programs works
ok and yesterday I could get in to word and excel which I
had not been able to access. the reason I could not access
may have been due to speed as the pc appears to have
slowed down dramatically, (although this could also be
due to other system problems i suspect).

Ø I cannot access explorer, outlook etc when i try
to the egg timer appears and then after a while disappears
leaving no advise or warning message. task manager does
not show the programme as failing to respond, it does not
show any action?

Ø Most of the desktop short cuts have changed to
show an icon like a typical application icon (white box
with a blue header) with what looks like a white page
behind it? Broadband and some other applications (possible
none office ones) have there normal icons.

Ø Most of the amended icon short cuts do not work –
when clicked the egg timer appears and then nothing
happens. however, as mentioned above, word was not working
(or possibly just taking a long time to open but now is
and "my document" files i could not see i can now see.

I tried reinstalling XP but nothing happened and no
warnings were given.

I tried recovery – taking the PC back to an earlier
format – but only the outline of the application appeared
and it would not run.

Any ideas? Could it be that XP has not been registered,
though I am pretty sure I submitted the form. That said
since having XP I have not been able to send only receive
e mail. But other applications such as some estate agent
sites when I have submitted forms / requests on their
systems they have gone through – hope you do not mind me
asking.

another suggestion i have is that the firewall may be the
source of the problem?

any advise gratefully recieved
