For most purposes, superscripts work well enough (select, then Format >
Font). Use the equation editor if you need advanced math formatting.

Use "Format", "Font", "Superscript". If you use it a lot you can add the
icon to an existing toolbar by right-clicking the toolbar area, click
"Customize", click the "Commands" TAB, select the "Format" category, scroll
down and find the "Superscript" icon and drag it up to a location you like
on an existing toolbar. I normally put it next to the "I" (Italics).

I find the fastest method is to hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys while
pressing the + key to toggle superscript on and off.
