Export only local contacts/calendar?

Conrad

I found no mention of this problem in this newsgroup's archive nor on the
mvp page. If I missed the solution, I apologize, but could someone point me
to it then?

With the 11.2.x updates, Entourage can only Export local contacts and
calendars. However, I rely on an Exchange server and so all my contacts and
calendars are there. After the updates, I can no longer make a local backup
of these items using Export. This is a serious problem for me.

Why would I ever need to export or back up those item if they're stored on
the server, you ask? Because I also use a Palm device, and in the process
of synchronizing, something has gone wrong several times where all my
contacts or events were deleted, and Entourage likewise deleted them on the
server.

Is there anyway to restore the Export functionality that allowed me to
backup those items locally?

Dragging and dropping all contacts and events and creating vcards is out of
the question since there are too many, and Entourage has never successfully
created vcards for all items each time I've tested this method.
Furthermore, backing up the entire Entourage database just for those items
is also out of the question, since I don't have the disk space to keep all
my mail twice, just to have a backup of my contacts and events.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Conrad

Yep. That's a very serious (known) limitation. You can copy all your
entries locally though and then proceed to backing them up. It's
tedious, but it works.

Is it smart about duplicates though? In other words, do you need to
work out which contacts are different and only copy those (for fear of
each contact being duped) or can I just do a CMD-A and copy all over? I
seem to remember trying that and it did create dupes. I can't see why
there can't be a simple setting that sync's the local and remote (for
calendar and contacts). Perhaps we can script a solution.

It sure isn't...

I only keep one address book on my Mac. It works fine if the local
address book is empty: you copy everything locally and then back them
up. Once it's done, you can trash all the local entries.
If you already have some local entries, I doubt it will overwrite them.
It simply duplicates them and then cleaning up is a real pain.
To differentiate the new and old entries, you can assign them a special
category, this way you can easely sort them out according to categorie
and find the duplicates.
